Vanguard’s Talon League: Major Changes

It is with deep regret, but also great joy, that I announce both the demise of the original Vanguard's Talon format and the emergence of the new one. No longer a 400 point intro-fest, VT has evolved (or maybe the word is mutated) into a completely new and 'always-on' style of League.

I shall explain the changes...

VT1 and 2 were short run 'Leagues' that functioned as informal and drawn out tournaments (well, sort of). What we are going to run in the New Year will involve players in the store simply signing up, paying their one-off entry fee and $5 to play and then submitting their game results to store staff. The staff will then go about collating their results into an on-going 'ladder' which will be upkept online here on PGL. The top 20 or so players in each corner of the League (there are four corners: WH40K, WFB, Warmachine/Hordes and Flames of War) will have their name put on a ladder displayed in the Penrith Tin Soldier for all to see. These players will be the top players in the store, both for frequency of play and general game-winning talent, so getting your name up there will be valued.

Every so often there will be a one-day playoff to determine the champion in each corner. When or how this will be done will be announced closer to time. Prizes will be involved in these playoffs, so do your best to be in the top spots before each of these events!

More will be posted later, but suffice to say the 400 point organised VT League is no more. We apologise but feel this will be much better.

After all, you can still play 400 point games in this one if you and your opponent wish to...

Prepping for Vanguard’s Talon 3

A while ago, I mentioned that I was going to do up a Heresy-Era Emperor's Children army for VT3 and beyond. Having done a bit of work on them this month, I thought it was time to show you guys what's been done.

My400-point army is pretty small (especially compared to the Imperial Guard force I ran last time!), consisting of six Raptors and six Noise Marines. So far, this is what I've got done:

Emperor's Children for Vanguard's Talon 3, Work in Progress.

Emperor's Children for Vanguard's Talon 3, Work in Progress.

So that's six Noise Marines and three Raptors. My previous post outlined how I was painting the armour, but I'va added to it. After the dullcote, I'm now adding battle damage and making the Marines look a little more like they've been fighting for a while, instead of having just marched off the parade ground. The chips in the armour are added by hitting the odd edge and armour plate with thin lines of Mithril Silver (see Icon Bearer below).

Noise Marine Icon Bearer

Noise Marine Icon Bearer

In addition to this, each Marine has some degree of personalization on their armour. Generally, this is just the addition of an Eye of Horus to the helmet, or 'III' to represent the pride of the Emperor's Children in their Legion. On this Icon Bearer, however, you can see the left knee pad has been decked out with a quartered design with the Eye of Horus, a 'III,' and 'F' for Fulgrim.

The Raptors have been made out of the Vanguard Veteran miniatures, with the Emepror's Children Shoulde pads added where necessary. The Champion for the squad is a re-paint of Captain Shrike, because I really like the model, and he fits in quite well with the Vanguard Vets.

That's it from me for now, so I leave you with a picture of my Raptors in full flight.

Cheeri-o,
LC12.

Planetary Empires

For a little while now, Dingus, Angron, Suqnier, NeedleFingers, BaBoon, MagicWorks and myself have been playing through the Planetary Empires campaign system.

All-in-all, we've found it to be a good system, although a few mew rules had to be added to make things a little more interesting and fair for all. First of all, there is no system in place for attackers and defenders. Seeing as we had an odd number of players, and we wanted to avoid the possibility of one person playing multiple games and winning the campaign in one turn, we decided that you could only take a territory if you were 'attacking.' If the other player was attacking you, then you couldn't take a tile even if you won. We also agreed that although the rules said that any unit could be taken as an ally from any Codex, players could only select units from their own Codex with any extra points they had gained during the campaign.

Some highlights from me in the last four rounds.

Round 1: Loose Cannon 12 vs. Suqnier.
My Tyranids took on the Thousand Sons in the first round, and the result was a solid victory for the hordes of Chaos. Although I had extra points due to the vagaries of the campaign meta-system, Suqnier had the advantage of two extra Universal Special Rules, which he used to give his Daemon Princes Infiltrate and Furious Charge. The game started well for the Tyranids, with my Hive Tyrant killing one Obliterator outright in the first turn. Shortly after that, however, the Daemon Princes swung into action, ripping though the vanguard organisms the Hive Mind had sent out. With the objectives on the hill firmly in the hands of the Thousand Sons, the Tyranids were forced to retreat. Next time, they'd be back with Carnifexes.

Round 2: Loose Cannon 12 vs. Dingus.
In their first game against the Armoured Company, the Tyranids started well again, scoring some kills with outflanking Genestealers and a couple of angry Carnifexes. Unfortunately for Old One Eye, the Leman Russ Executioner lived up to its name, and one violent fusillade of plasma later, a pair of smoking hooves were all that remained of one of my beloved Carnifexes. the rest of the army started to falter at this point, as nothing could roll above a 1 or a 2 on the Vehicle Damage Chart, despite multiple penetrating hits. Having hit such a brick wall, and with the Armoured Company in firm control of both objectives, the Hive was once again forced back. Not a good start to the campaign, but not yet cripplingly bad.

Round 3: Loose Cannon 12 vs. MagicWorks.
Round three saw me facing off against the Space Marines, and once again I was up in points, but down in Universal Special Rules. Facing me across the ruined city were a squad of Sternguard Veterans with Relentless, and a squad of 10 Terminators with Feel No Pain. Trying to ignore the Terminators, I focused my attack on the rest of the army, cutting through a Land Speeder and a couple of tactical squads with relative ease. The rapid relocation of the Sternguard Veterans via Rhino across the table, however, put them out of assault range of my Carnifexes, and therefore generally safe from serious harm. A very close game, with both sides scoring high numbers of kill points. In the end, however, the Tyranids were undone when a Spore Mine exploded, giving an extra kill point to MagicWorks and winning him the game.

Round 4: Loose Cannon 12 vs. Angron.
Round 4 of our campaign began to see my luck begin to turn, and the Tyranids faced the White Scars in an objective-based game in which I was defending. As my Carnifexes and Hive Tyrant began to fan out to secure the objectives for my soon-to-arrive Genestealers, the White Scars rode out to meet them. One plucky Flamer-wielding Marine even managed to burn a would off Old One Eye. To add insult to injury, he wounded him in close combat as well! His victory was short-lived, however, as Old One Eye promptly ate him, the rest of his squad and chased down the sergeant for sport before turing his attention to the three Attack Bikes harassing him and the newly-arrived Genestealers. The Genestealers assaulted the Bikes, and were themselves counter-charged by Vanguard Veterans descending from their Thunderhawk. This charge was swiftly blunted by the intiative 6 close combat bio-weapons, which left only two Vanguards left to take advantage of their charge. Promptly losing combat, the remaining Attack Bike fell back, while the Vanguard Veterans were hacked to pieces in the Tyranid turn. On the other side of the board, one Lictor managed to hold a 10-man Space Marine Squad at bay long enough to stop them reaching their objective in time. A win for the Bugs!

Round 4: Loose Cannon 12 vs. Dingus.
This game saw the Tyranids on the offensive, pushing back against the Armoured Company which had so humiliated them in Round 2. With a kill-point game lined up and a Spearhead deployment type, the bugs were already in a strong position. Dingus' tanks were swiftly outflanked by Genestealers, and the Leman Russ Exexutioner which had so tortured me during the first game was swiftly dispatched by a Lictor in Turn 2. With this major threat (and my old nemesis, Command Tank 501) out of the picture, the Carnifexes and Hive Tyrant swiftly got in amongst them. With none of the poor rolls that kept them alive last game (and more than a few '6's for Old One Eye's number of attacks), the Leman Russes went up like fireworks, and a few well-placed shots from the Hive Tyant immobilised one of the Chimaeras that were trying to escape the carnage and hold out 'till the end of the game. Withso many destroyed vehicles strewn about the battlefield, the Tyranid advance was assured, even with the losses suffered by the smaller bio-organisms.

Signing off,
Loose Cannon 12.

Historical Night #1

Whilst the initial turnout was low, the gaming was enjoyable and I found myself facing off against a menacing bunch of Early Imperial Roman Legionaries and their supporting skirmishers. This was Warhammer Ancient Battles at 1000 points. I truly didn't know how to deal with Legionaries using my assorted mediaeval units. I wasn't even sure the light gun was any kind of advantage - it only killed about five figures all game. Mostly it was used to make small craters between units. My force was comprised of a wide selection of infantry from knights to peasants, as well as the militia and mercenaries in between. Without any cavalry though it was going to be an interesting fight for a mediaeval army.

After an action packed six turns, my Imperial Holy Roman Empire army managed to wrench victory from the clambering claws of defeat. Not sure how this happened but the victory was total. Stars of the game were the dismounted knights who held off a Legion their own number for three turns and routed them on the fourth. The peasants also made themselves noticed (of all units): they managed to successfully flank a Roman Legion, panic it and subsequently defeat it in melee after it rallied and came back for retribution. A great game was had by all and I am eagerly awaiting the next historical night on the 6th of November.

Don't forget that this is not purely a WAB night, other games are welcome as long as they are both historical miniatures games and played at 28mm scale. The other games most likely to appear in the short term are any of the other Warhammer Historical games, Napoleon (Napoleonic Wars) and Battlefield Evolution: World at War (WW2), but don't let that stop you bringing something else along! Hope to see you there next fortnight!

Just a couple of pics from last week's game (pictures are grainy - apologies, phone camera was in operation):

Napoleon: A Brief Review

The Napoleon rulebook by Foundry

The Napoleon rulebook as available from the Tin Soldier

A few of you will have noticed the new Napoleon rulebook from Foundry in the store. A fine rulebook it is too! Other than a couple of insignificant issues the rulebook is probably the best thing to happen to Napoleonic gaming in a very long time.

The book presents as a solid, hardbound, 233 page tome and is printed in glossy colour throughout. It contains plenty of period reference material - equally useful for the beginner to the period and the veteran who needs a quick refresher. The book is pleasing to read and has a high production standard. That said, there are a couple of things which could have been done better. The book appears to have been rushed through the editorial process (just a bit). There are obvious typos here and there and some of the quotes are repeated in different sections of the book. These are of course not essential rules text items and so do not really affect game play at all. But for the perfectionist (and the gamer who just forked out good money for the thing) it is a tad annoying. We shouldn't let that get in the way of what is otherwise a very good game though. After all, it could have been printed on plain paper and photocopied the way this type of game often has been in the past, but it hasn't, and we like it like that...
